“Mr. Ferntastic” Fernando Avalos – Instructor & Healer
Director – Quality Control
Associate Director – Operations
Fernando Avalos is one of the most senior members of UMASDA, second in overall tenure and third in line of the yudanshakai. He started taking martial arts at Hartnell College studying Yasashii Do Martial Arts under Hanshi Everett Rodriguez in 2005. Due to his schedule conflicting, he was unable to continue training regularly in Yasashii Do, but happened to swing by one day and met a group of the original UMASDA students who had shown up that night as well. Fernando liked what he saw, and joined UMASDA in September 2006.
Fernando is currently studying four lineages of martial arts under Steve Zalazowski, Sr. with UMASDA: American Martial Science™, PJMS™, IKCA Kenpo™, and Enshin Itto-Ryu Battojutsu. From each of these fantastic arts/systems, he continues to learn and grow with his focus on helping others.
He is also a jikideshi (personal student) of Julio Toribio, Kancho of Seibukan Jujutsu and trains with Marcus Thornton, Shihan and Dojocho of Seibukan Jujutsu of Salinas. In addition to his martial arts training, Fernando has earned a Massage Therapy degree and uses his knowledge of the healing arts to help his fellow student body members.
When not actively training personally on the mat, Fernando pursues further knowledge as an Instructor, giving back to his school and helping develop the next generation of the student body. He currently holds an apprenticeship in American Martial Science™ and is actively pursuing certification as a full instructor, teaching on Tuesday and Thursday nights regularly.
